Maryland Athletic Director, Kevin Anderson will hold a press conference at 3PM ET today (12/20).  It is widely expected that Anderson will announce that Ralph Friedgen's contract will be bought out and Mike Leach will be the new football coach.

It's hard to believe we are here.  The drama from the last two days has been unprecedented.  Buying out the Fridge's contract is a nice way of saying that he is being fired.  That's right.  The Terps are firing the reigning ACC Coach of the Year before the season is even over.  That is a PR disaster no matter how you try and spin it.

On the other hand, I'm tantalized at the prospect of Mike Leach roaming the sidelines.  The man has proven himself to be an unparalleled innovator and winner.  He brought a program, Texas Tech, from permanent third fiddle in the state of Texas to within one game of an appearance in the National Championship Game. Imagine what he will do in the ACC?

The Terps already have some of the pieces to compete at a high level immediately and Leach is capable of bringing the program to another level.  It's hard not get excited at these prospects.

Still, it's hard not to feel a little bit sour about this afternoon's presser.  The Fridge has built a legacy at Maryland.  He's been a great coach, an alum, and he's being ushered out like he was Ron Vanderlinden.
