Get To Know Ashton Pankey. DBR Did.

Reader and frequent poster, Diamondback Russ, had the opportunity to talk to Terp recruit Ashton Pankey about his visit to College Park this weekend.  What follows is the transcript of that discussion:
After a busy weekend traveling to College Park for his official visit, taking his SAT's and an early train ride home to play in a New Jersey vs New York All Star game; Ashton Pankey took a few minutes to do a Q&A with me about his visit and where his recruitment stands.
  1. Talk about your visit. My Mom came on the visit with me.  We toured campus, met with the coaches and stuff.  We both feel comfortable about the visit to Maryland.  It was about a 3 hour train ride and she said if I go to Maryland she could make a lot of games.
  2. Do you have any family in the DC area? I had an uncle that lived there but he doesn’t anymore.
  3. You were originally going to visit several weeks ago then it was pushed back twice.  Tell me how you dealt with waiting to finally visit Maryland? It sucked because I really wanted to go.  But Coach Williams had a conference media obligation, and then my mom had something she had to do.  I didn't want to visit without her.  I couldn't wait to get there.  Then once I was there I didn’t want to leave.
  4. Who was your host? Dino, he's a real good guy.
  5. What did you think of the Terps system when you got to watch practice? They looked good. I think I’d fit because they get out and run the floor. I’m working on my handle so I can expand my game to be a 4/3 type player.
  6. What did the coaches say about how they’d use you? To contribute right away inside with rebounding.
  7. Which coach is your lead recruiter? Chuck.
  8. Are you familiar with the other recruits that have committed to Maryland in your class? No not really.  But I think we’re playing against Montrose Christian this year so after the game I can talk to Ross.
  9. In addition to Maryland what other schools have you visited and plan to visit? I’m going to Houston next weekend and then will compare things and make my decision in a couple of weeks.
  10. Did Maryland help their chances? YES most definitely.

DBR Update On Terp Recruiting Targets

In his own words, our very own Diamondback Russ summarizes his weekend of watching AAU ball. Enjoy! I checked out an AAU tournament in Saratoga Springs this past weekend to Albany City Rocks (ACR) in action. Their 17U team was dominant, but when you can start a lineup that includes three top 150 recruits in the class of 2010, locals are disapp [...] Read More »

From DBR: Taran and Me

Diamondback Russ just posted this under another thread, but I thought I would add give it its own thread."I just got back from the Bishop Maginn HS game. Taran Buie somehow scored 23 points. I say “somehow” because I don’t know where they came from. I was stunned when the I saw the scorers sheet (I read it upside down so maybe he scored 32 lol). Se [...] Read More »

DBR Recruiting Report 12/19/2008

Gary Williams and Rob Ehsan were in New York last Saturday, watching Taran Buie's Bishop Maginn squad beat Tobias Harris’s Long Island Lutheran team 63-60. Buie scored 24 points while Tobias Harris was held to 13 points. Harris had foul trouble (3 fouls before halftime) and Bishop Maginn double teamed him whenever he had the ball. I posted this i [...] Read More »

DBR Update 12/12/2008

As reported yesterday, the Terps thin front line got thinner as Jerome Burney is out anywhere from 3-6 weeks with a stress fracture on the bottom of his foot.  Let's all wish Rome a full and speedy recovery.  If you're looking for a silver lining in this injury take solace in the fact that after tonight the Terps have 10 days off (that's almost 2 o [...] Read More »

DBR Recruiting Update - 12/05/2008

The Terps are quite active on the trail for top talent in the class of 2010, and they’re also quietly working on the class of 2011 and 2012 but for today here’s an update on the class of 2010: Pe'Shon Howard was at UMD for a two day unofficial visit last week. Howard is a 6-2 junior combo guard, who plays for Oak Hill Academy. He is said to be a "B [...] Read More »

Big Terps Weekend and DBR report

Tonight is the start of huge weekend for Terps fans. Aside from a "are we able to beat mid-major teams by 20 points consistently" game against Vermont tonight; the Football Terps square off against Florida State for a must-win game.Vermont is likely a Tournament team come March. However, if tonight's game winds up ending like last year's Northeas [...] Read More »

DBR update 11/7/2008

The Terps definitely laid an egg last night. Cosh has to go. He's going against a QB with a bum ankle and he doesn't blitz? What is wrong with him? Force the QB to beat for chissake! The Terps still control their own destiny. If they can take care of business at home, they should go to a nice bowl. As for the basketball team, w'll get our firs [...] Read More »

DBR Update - 10/31/08

Happy Halloween folks. Not much going on this week with the football team on bye and basketball season yet to get underway.  I've been trying to write a basketball preview for weeks and I just can't seem to a get a sense of this team.  I'm sure I'm not the only one. It will be a wild ride in College Park this year.  More to come on this later.  For [...] Read More »

A Note from DBR - 10/24/08

Before we get into DBR's latest from the recruiting trail; the Terps need to care of business on Saturday. No excuses. If we aren't 6-2 24 hours from now, I am giving up on the season (not really, but I am damn tired of the inconsistency). As for the updae, I can't tell you how excited I am for the Leek Leek era. I don't care about the kid's skil [...] Read More »
