A Victory For The Ages. Terps Win In 2OT

What a game.  Vasquez turned in the best second half I can remember.  He was 11 for 23 in the second half.  He wilted down the stretch (finishing 4-14); but who can blame him?  The man played 48 minutes.

Vasquez made some mistakes (that 3pt with 6 seconds left in the first OT being the biggest); but he also found an open Hayes for what should have been the winning shot in regulation. Vasquez's line: 41pts, 7rebs, 6asts, 10-10 FT 5-15 3PT 48mins. It's the first 40 point game since Joe Smith pumped in 40 in Cameron in 1995.

The team won't quit.  Ever.  The credit goes Coach Williams and our guards (Hayes and Vaz). I haven't seen the final stats, but at one point late in the second half, VT was 70% from the field.  Somehow, the Terps took every shot VT threw at them and kept on coming.

Tonight's win was incredibly special.  It ended two unfortunate streaks:

1. For the first time since the ACC expanded to 12 teams, the Terps have earned a bye in the ACC Tournament.

2.  The Terps won at the Cassell Center for the first time since VT joined the league.

It's been my experience that the team the forces the tie in regulation has the edge in OT.  The team that was in the lead gets deflated and momentum shifts.  This is especially true when the team that loses the lead is on the road.  Well, these Terps defy all the rules. This is a special team.

Clearly Vasquez took center stage tonight, but Mosley played well for the second straight game and Jordan Williams grabbed 15 boards.  Milbourne's continued disappearance is an enigma; but we've proven we can without him (not that I'd like to make a habit of it).  This is a team of role players and we can be confident that someone will step up every night to complement Vasquez.

Undoubtedly, the Terps will be ranked in the next AP poll.  The RPI should shoot up as well.  Road wins against Top 50 teams tend to do that for you.  In my estimation, the Terps are looking at a 5 seed if the season ended today and if we beat Duke; I think we've earned a 4 seed.

Speaking of Duke; Wednesday night is going to be epic. The regular season ACC title is on the line (something the Terps haven't won since 1995 I believe) and it's senior night.

Our seniors have brought the program back from mediocrity and have left an indelible mark on the University.  Vasquez in particular has gotten the most out of his abilities and I expect that his name will be in the rafters next season.  He'll also have the chance to outplay John Scheyer and end the debate about who the ACC POY should be.

I asked after the NC State win two weeks ago if it was too early to say WWO.  Perhaps it was, but the Terps have been perfect since then. We've gone from bubble team to a high seed and they boys aren't done.

Let's beat Duke on Wednesday and claim the regular season title.

Georgia Tech Afterglow

It's been more than 24 hours since the Miracle at Comcast and I still don't know what to make of it. Personally, it's the only buzzer beater that I have ever witnessed in person.  I was there with the same guys who were with me when Drew Nicholas hit the game winner in the NCAA Tournament 7 years ago (we were in Vegas for that).  Since we see each [...] Read More »

Terps Crush NC State

Maryland is back.  Yes I'm prepared to say that.  Tonight's game was the most all-around dominating performance I've seen in years.  The scary thing was that NC State played relatively well and they got blown out!  Everybody came to play.  Mibourne lit it up, Mosley did all the little things, and Hayes hit a big shot or two.  Even Gregory played hi [...] Read More »

Terps Beat #18 FSU Handily 77-68

The Terps finally have a big win.  Granted, it was at home and against arguably the worst coach in the ACC; but the Terps are undefeated in the ACC.As a Ravens fan; I'm used to big Terp diasppointments when they share a weekend with a Ravens playoff game.  Not today.  I can't recall the last time my two favorite teams both won huge games on the sam [...] Read More »

Maryland In Sole Possession of First Place in the ACC Atlantic

Not only is that headline ridiculous, it's true.  The Terps are currently the only team in their division without a loss.  If the season ended today, we would be playing in the ACC Championship Game.  I think we can now all agree that the ACC is crazy.  The quality is lacking but anything can happen. The Terps squeaked by today.  They still made ple [...] Read More »

Terps Rise To The Occasion Upend Wake

What a performance!  Tonight we saw the two "G's", Gary and Greivis at their absolute apex.  Greivis was sublime.  The team hummed with him in the game.  Total up his assists and his points (some of his assists led to threes) and he accounted for about 45 of the Terps 75 points.  Take away our FTs, and Greivis was involved in just about every baske [...] Read More »

Maryland Trounces #6 Michigan State, 80-62

The Terps took it to Michigan State.  Boy, did they ever.  Tonight's victory was a season defining triumph. It was Gary Williams at his best.  No one gave the Terps a chance.  Most Soup readers thought that Maryland had a chance if everything fell our way.I'd say when Dave Neal SCORES 17 POINTS that everything is falling your way.  Sure, critics wi [...] Read More »

Five Football Games Left

Can anyone figure this team out? Going back to last season, the Terps have won five straight contests against ranked opponents. They have also lost to Middle Tennessee State in that time.At 5-2, the Terps are still positioned incredibly well to have a successful season. However, if history is any kind of indicator; being positioned well is exact [...] Read More »

Jekyll Shows Up; Terps Rout Wake

Ah, how nice was it to see the good Terps again. We sure did miss you guys. Here's hoping you stick around for a while this time!I have to say, what a performance by the entire team on Saturday as Maryland dominated Wake 26-0. This was a total team effort and the first time all season the team has played a complete game. I think we need to call [...] Read More »

Terps Ranked #26 in Latest AP Poll

Can you believe that?  Just three weeks after getting embarrassed by Middle Tennessee State; the Terps have risen to elite status.  Sure, they are not in the Top 25 yet, but the writing is on the wall.  Not only that, but the Terps seem to be playing their best football in years.  I guess that is what a competent QB will do for you. Both the defense [...] Read More »
