Terps Hold On Against Temple

The Terps looked amazingly good for 30 minutes against Temple and then proceeded to look amazingly bad.  In the end, they came up with enough big plays on both sides of the ball to hold on for a huge win.

It's huge because the Terps need every bit of momentum they can hang their hats on and winning despite four turnovers does wonders.  Of course, the schedule only gets tougher and the young Terps must learn to take care of the ball if they hope to beat a school like Connecticut next Saturday.

I think the Terps can beat the Huskies.  3-0 would be a dream for this team.  They'd surpass last year's win total in September.  No one could have imagined that with so many true freshman playing skill positions.

Perry Hills showed me something today.  He's got good touch (that TD to Furstenburg was a thing of beauty) and some moxie (he hung in the pocket nicely on those jailbreak screens).  He still makes freshman-esque decisions but that is to be expected.  He improved from the William and Mary game and that's all we can for at this point.

Stephon Diggs will be a special player at Maryland.  He's a difference maker and the most talented guy in the locker room.  He'll see the ball more and more a the weeks go on.

The defense gave up huge passing yardage to a weak passing team. It's not a good sign but it mostly looked like blown assignments that can hopefully get corrected. Still, the defense has been stout thus far and will need to continue that trend against UConn.

So far, all eight turnovers over the two games have been committed by freshman.  It's not at all surprising but belies the 2-0 record.  There are just too many inexperienced guys playing skill positions.  It's bound to catch up the Terps.  It didn't today and it may not next Saturday but it will eventually.

For now, Edsall has to be feeling quite lucky given the circumstances.  He's virtually assured an improved record from last year (ridiculously low bar, I know) and the freshman will get better every game. Unfortunately, so do the opponents.

It's one game at a time.  Let's focus on a beatable Huskies squad.

Temple Game Thread

Well we're here.  The Terps are playing the perennially pathetic Temple Owls and we're underdogs.  How did we get here?  It's not worth rehashing.  I'll just say this:  a loss to Temple will solidify my belief that the Terps are headed a bad season, perhaps as bad as last season.  If that comes to fruition, Edsall will [...] Read More »

Dez Wells Decision Thread

A decision from Xavier guard, Dez Wells is imminent.  It's between Maryland, Memphis and Oregon for Wells' services.   Dez spent the weekend in College Park taking in the William and Mary game and then retiring to Bentley's.  Wells tweeted his whole way through the festivities and it's clear he had a great time.  He even us [...] Read More »

Terps Open Football Season Against William And Mary

Let's be honest.  No one really thinks these Terps are going to be much good this year.  I'd say all hope went out the door when CJ Brown got injured but that would be a lie.  My hope faded when Danny O'Brien transferred.  In order to be competitive, the Terps will need a similar freshman campaign out of one of these two fre [...] Read More »

Welcome Back Eric Hayes

It was announced today that Eric Hayes has joined the basketball team as a graduate assistant.  Who doesn't love that?  A coach's son, Hayes is the kind of player who you just knew would find his way into the coaching ranks himself one day.  Well, that day has come and I couldn't be happier. He knows the game like the back of his [...] Read More »

CJ Brown Is Out For The Year Thread

CJ Brown decided to end his season with a knee injury right about the same time that I was in back-to-back-to-back client meetings followed by an evening event in Minneapolis so I apologize for the late thread.  It's a big blow to the program considering Edsall clearly was building the offense around Brown's skill set.  That said, my [...] Read More »

Leaked Penn State Penalties

Here's a screenshot of what could be announced tomorrow. If true, the penalties are unprecedented.  It's hard to imagine but it now appears likely that there will be no football in State College in this year.  What's more, all current players will be allowed to transfer without penalty.  There will be no TV until 2015 and no footb [...] Read More »

Kevin Anderson Is Probably Leaving

News outlets are reporting that Kevin Anderson is contract with Stanford University to take over the Athletic Department.  It'd be close to impossible to argue that Anderson's tenure has been a successful.  He's overseen an unprecedented drop in performance from both the football and basketball teams.  He fired the best football coac [...] Read More »

Back to the FSU Exit Thing

FSU currently runs about a $2M budget deficit. Over the past couple of years, according to the USA Today, FSU’s spending has outstripped its revenues by roughly $8M. This from a school that can’t even win the middling ACC. Burt Reynolds or Lee Corso must be their staff accountant. But let’s entertain the financial issues that FSU will face shou [...] Read More »
