Maryland vs George Mason Game Thread

The Terps take on George Mason in the 17th and perhaps last BB&T Classic tomorrow.  I say last because Coach Turgeon indicated in an interview that this may be Maryland's finale in the local game.  He points to the lack of attendance as one reason.  Turgeon put words to an incredibly disturbing trend.  Where are our fans?  Comcast has been at best a half filled arena this season.  It begs the question, has Maryland basketball lost its luster?  Sure, there have been down years and the loss of a legendary coach hasn't helped but is anyone paying attention to what Turgeon has built over the last 15 months?

Maryland is one of if not the best rebounding team in the NCAA right now.  That means Maryland will be in EVERY game.  No matter how poorly they shoot, limiting opponents' second chance opportunities is one of the most fundamental aspects of defensive basketball. The Terps are also a good FT shooting team, another key element to being in every game.

In short, there will be lots of exciting games at Comcast this season.  Maybe a neutral site game in the District against a mid-major is not exactly a hot ticket, but it is an important non-conference game. George Mason has an RPI of #58 (MD is #66).  Mason is likely to be the Terps highest ranked non-conference win should we beat them.  Basically, tomorrow's game is hugely important for our NCAA Tournament hopes and the stadium will be bereft of Terp fans.

What is it going to take to get Terp fans to show up to Comcast? When I was in school; you needed to donate $5K - $10K just for the opportunity to buy season tickets.  Now?  I could call the ticket office tomorrow and buy a season ticket package no questions asked.  There is the potential for a special season in College Park.  What a shame if there is no one in the stands to see it.

Post Game Thoughts - MD v NU

I'm late getting to this due to some client responsibilities last night but I did want to put down a few thoughts about the game on Tuesday. - Welsh-Ryan Arena is wonderful and horrible at the same time.  Wonderful: There is not a bad seat in the house.  Horrible:  The seats are mostly wooden bleachers and it looks like you push i [...] Read More »

Maryland vs Northwestern - ACC v B1G Challenge

It's a Turtle Soup Reunion / Road Trip! Both Gregg and I will be in attendance in the gorgeous Welsh-Ryan Arena.  This will be my first look at this year's squad.  All I know about Northwestern is that their arena sucks and they run the Princeton offense.  They are also undefeated.  I would expect that only one team will [...] Read More »

Georgia Southern and UNC Threads

Our football team is playing hard but virtually unable to do anything offensively. Even so, they merit some space on today's game thread. The bigger game is against Georgia Southern at Comcast Center.  The basketball team needs play much better than what we saw in the second half vs. Lafayette.  Granted, Lafayette was on fire hitting 1 [...] Read More »

Lafayette v Maryland Thread

When you work digital advertising, the week before thanksgiving is always brutal. Today was no exception.  I'm just getting to this thread as the game is starting.   I don't know how much we'll learn from games against the Lafayette's of the world, but we have to make the best of them.  We should look for continued improvement and [...] Read More »

B1G Excitement

As an homage to our new conference namesake as well as an attempt to get everyone on board; I present 10 reasons to get excited about Maryland joining the B1G: 10.  We get our chance at revenge against Penn State for all those defeats not to mention the 70-7 drubbing that the disgraced one hung on us in 1993. Remember after this class gradu [...] Read More »

Done Deal: Maryland To Join B1G

There is a press conference scheduled at 2:30PM ET today (spoiler alert: the Big Ten Network is carrying it live) to officially announce that Maryland is joining the B1G Conference. I've made my feelings on the issue clear in the previous thread so I won't rehash them here.  I'll just summarize my feelings with the following:  you giv [...] Read More »

A Reasonable Maryland To B1G Thread

There a million opinions floating around about Maryland's impending switch to the B1G. In my opinion, it all comes down to William "Slappy" Kirwan's influence on the Board of Regents. Personally, I think Kirwan will block the deal. I've never met the man, but every opportunity he's had to do something bold in his career, he's refrained fr [...] Read More »

Maryland vs LIU Thread

Before getting into tonight's game, I'll briefly address the rumors swirling throughout Twitter about Maryland joining the Big10.  Although, until there is something definitive, it seems pointless to waste time thinking or writing about it.  I'll just say that it would be an odd move to make now considering that the ACC just raised the ex [...] Read More »

Maryland vs Moorhead State Thread

Terps open the home slate tonight vs Moorhead State.  Moorhead appears to be frisky (senior laden, make lots of 3's); but this is still Cupcake City for the Terps.  I'll be disappointed with anything less than a 20 point win here. I'm interested to see if the Terps are able to improve their shooting performance from Friday.  Faust [...] Read More »
