Adjehi Baru signs with College of Charleston, recruiting world shakes collective heads

12/6/2010 10:29:54 PM Per Evan Daniels, among other sources, Baru, the five-star center who was also known as the Terps' top remaining target, has committed to CofC in one of the recruiting head-scratchers of recent memory.

Baru's legal guardian's son, a barely passable ballplayer who didn't receive a single other D-1 scholarship, signed with Charleston early in the year.

That kid, according to Daniels, is Baru's best friend, which was the reason Charleston was favored to win Baru's services from the start, despite schools like Kentucky and Maryland offering him a shot at some sort of college legacy. Baru opted to stick with his bestie (shocker) and hope that NBA scouts still notice him.

Where does this leave Gary Williams? In a corner, pretty much. Other big man targets (Johnny O'Bryant, Greg Lewis, Antwan Space) have all signed elsewhere. The only remaining player of substance is Desmond Hubert. Luckily for the Terps, Hubert appears to be a Maryland lean at this point.

I'm not in crisis lockdown mode like a lot of people out there. We have so many young players, and although they're mostly guards, as are our two 2011 signees to this point, there is quality youth on the front lines. Need I remind you Jordan Williams is a sophomore? I don't see him leaving after this year, and I'd be willing to be he stays all four.

Past him, there's still James Padgett and Berend Weijs for next year, and Ashton Pankey, not a bad prospect himself, to fill in the gaps if no one comes in until 2012. Still, adding Hubert would definitely ease my mind.
